How to prepare for your fingerprint appointment

A few simple steps that help your FD-258 fingerprint cards come out clean and get accepted the first time.

Getting fingerprinted takes about 15 minutes, but a little preparation helps your cards come out clean and get accepted the first time.

Read your agency’s instructions

Your employer or licensing agency usually tells you which card to use, how many copies they need and where to send them. Some include an ORI number or a reason code. Have those instructions handy when we arrive.

Bring the right ID

You’ll need a current, government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID or passport.

Take care of your hands

  • Skip lotion the day of your appointment. It makes the ink smear.
  • Wash and dry your hands before we start.
  • If your hands are very dry or your fingertips are worn, drink water and avoid harsh hand sanitizer for a day or two beforehand. Clear ridges make a better print.

Have your blank card ready

If your agency mailed you a card, have it ready. Otherwise, we bring FD-258 cards with us.
